Candidature de Macky Sall à l’ONU : Boubacar Boris Diop doute de l’effet du soutien de Bassirou Diomaye Faye
Macky Sall's candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations continues to fuel political debate. In an interview with IMPACT.SN , writer and essayist Boubacar Boris Diop believes that the support shown by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye could have the opposite effect to that intended. The author reveals that he himself signed the petition opposing this candidacy. He believes that the President's endorsement has reignited criticism of the former president. "I signed the online petition against this candidacy, and I have the impression that the presidential support, far from boosting Macky Sall, is actually working against him. The event has, in fact, provided an opportunity to bring up the misdeeds of his regime again," he states.
Boubacar Boris Diop mentions several initiatives launched against the former head of state. He cites, in particular, the actions of lawyer Juan Branco, the work of Oumou Khalsoum Diallo, the Collective of Families of Victims of Macky Sall, Horizons Sans Frontières, and the stance taken by Human Rights Watch. According to him, the warm welcome given to Macky Sall in Dakar and the support attributed to US President Donald Trump are not decisive factors. He also recalls the principle of regional rotation, which could favor a candidate from Latin America. The essayist believes that this candidacy could be driven by a different logic. "One might wonder if the main objective for the former president isn't simply to be seen playing on the world stage. The status of a former candidate for such a prestigious international position could serve as a talisman against defamatory accusations or even potential legal troubles in Senegal," he asserts.
When asked about the need for Macky Sall to respond to the accusations against him, Boubacar Boris Diop believes that the Senegalese people are justified in demanding explanations. He recalled the violence that marked the final years of the previous regime and cited the deaths of protesters as well as several legal cases that, in his view, must be clarified. "The Senegalese people, and especially its youth, have every reason to be harsh on Macky Sall. In fact, after three changes of government, this is the first time that the Senegalese have so insistently demanded accountability from their former president," he said. He added: "In a country where the right to protest is a democratic achievement enshrined in the Constitution, dozens of protesters have been killed, and he must be held accountable for that, as well as for the two thousand arbitrary detentions."
The writer also questions the reasons that led Bassirou Diomaye Faye to support this candidacy after having suggested it wasn't a priority. He suggests the president may have been under significant pressure. He also believes the president's decisions are now generating recurring controversies. "It's possible he hasn't really changed his mind; the pressure was probably too great. In any case, it's not easy to say what guiding principles govern President Faye's choices," he observes.
In his view, this decision has placed Macky Sall's candidacy back at the center of public debate in an unfavorable context. Boubacar Boris Diop reports having heard supporters of the president express their incomprehension regarding this initiative. He concludes that this episode illustrates the political difficulties Bassirou Diomaye Faye has faced since coming to power.
