Capitaine Seydina Oumar Touré : « Diomaye Faye n'a pas trahi, il reste fidèle à ses engagements »
When questioned about the accusations of treason leveled against President Bassirou Diomaye Faye since his political split with Ousmane Sonko, Captain Seydina Oumar Touré refuted this interpretation of events. According to the president of the Union for a Just Senegal (USJ), the actions taken by the head of state since coming to power demonstrate, on the contrary, that he remains faithful to the commitments he made to the Senegalese people.
According to him, Bassirou Diomaye Faye's first commitment was to reduce government spending. "Two years after coming to power, he abolished the High Council of Territorial Authorities as well as the Economic, Social and Environmental Council. These are commitments he kept," he emphasizes. Seydina Oumar Touré also believes that the president is making steady progress on the issue of national sovereignty. He cites in particular the departure of French forces from Senegal, which, according to him, was achieved through negotiation. "We have been independent since 1960, but it was a young president who managed to get the French to leave without causing a diplomatic rupture. That's an achievement that must be acknowledged," he asserts.
According to him, Bassirou Diomaye Faye also stands out for his style of governance. "Diomaye doesn't communicate to convince. He simply tells the truth," he maintains, recalling that his support for the head of state was strengthened when the latter publicly declared that he would not interfere in judicial decisions.
The president of the USJ (Union of Justice Students) mentions, in this regard, the replacement of the Minister of Justice. “Many thought the problem stemmed from Ousmane Diagne. He was replaced by Yacine Fall, presented as close to Ousmane Sonko, but the criticism continued to target President Diomaye. This clearly shows that the problem lies elsewhere,” he analyzes. Drawing on the values acquired during his career as a gendarme, Seydina Oumar Touré reaffirms his commitment to the independence of the judiciary. “We denounced the way the justice system operated when we were in the opposition. Now in power, we cannot demand that it function in reverse to satisfy political interests,” he insists.
For him, a state governed by the rule of law can only function if magistrates carry out their duties with complete freedom. “Justice must do its work freely. A judge or a prosecutor does not receive instructions from the executive branch and must not obey blindly. We do not need to turn against the institutions; on the contrary, we must strengthen them,” concludes Captain Seydina Oumar Touré.
