President Bassirou Diomaye Faye granted an audience this Thursday, August 27, at the Presidential Palace to General Birame Diop, President of the ECOWAS Commission. The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss a series of strategic issues concerning the future and stability of the sub-regional organization.

At the start of the discussions, General Birame Diop expressed his gratitude to the Head of State for the trust shown, while also thanking the leaders of ECOWAS for the formal confirmation of his appointment to head the executive body.
Economy, free movement and the imperative of security
Discussions focused primarily on reviving the Eco project, the single community currency, and on assessing the collection rates of community levies intended to ensure the sustainable financing of ECOWAS institutions. The crucial issue of the free movement of people and goods within the sub-region was also reaffirmed as a priority lever for deepening interstate economic integration.
On the security front, the Head of State and the President of the Commission agreed on the urgency of operationalizing the regional counter-terrorism brigade, at a time when the region is facing major security challenges.

This hearing comes at a crucial turning point for ECOWAS, which is facing significant challenges in integration, cohesion and sub-regional governance.
