Climat et conflits : Marie Khone Faye appelle à renforcer la résilience des femmes et des filles
Faced with the destructive effects of climate change and armed conflict, African women and girls must be at the heart of response and decision-making processes. This was the key plea made by the First Lady of Senegal, Marie Khone Faye, on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, in Dakar, during the official opening ceremony of the "Building Resilience" campaign, organized under the auspices of the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD).
In the presence of the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, as well as several First Ladies from across the continent, she emphasized the extreme vulnerability of women in the face of environmental and security crises. Her speech highlighted the diversity of these hardships, addressing everything from the plight of mothers confronted with recurring floods in the suburbs to the distress of coastal communities threatened by rising sea levels, not to mention the women forced into exile due to conflicts.
Education , empowerment and local transformation
“Africa will not build anything sustainable without women and girls,” the First Lady stressed, calling for a paradigm shift to ensure their full participation in decision-making bodies and on-the-ground solutions.
In this regard, Marie Khone Faye outlined her strategic priorities, which focus on girls' education and women's economic empowerment. Her agenda includes strengthening training programs, providing technical and financial support to women's groups, and supporting the processing and promotion of local products.
