« Diomaye Faye se souvient du nom de chaque militant » : Le portrait intimiste du chef de l'État par le DG du Soleil
In an interview with Seneweb, Lamine Niang, director general of the national daily newspaper Le Soleil , reflected on his activism within Pastef and the qualities he attributes to its president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye. He recalled joining the party in 2016, while still living in Canada. Before that, he was active in the June 23 Movement (M23): “Before 2012, I was involved with the M23. My activism was such that I even called the Montreal police during some demonstrations. It was becoming risky, especially since I was a civil servant,” he explained. In 2021, along with other activists from the diaspora, he participated in the creation of “Jotna Media,” a platform designed to offer Senegalese living abroad a space for expression. At that time, he was in charge of communications for Pastef in Canada and a member of the party's National Secretariat. "Ousmane Sonko's Facebook page posts went through me. We were constantly trying to defend the party's values and the image of its president," he explains.
Lamine Niang also reveals that several columns written by Bassirou Diomaye Faye were distributed through Jotna Media: “We were in the opposition, but we worked methodically and in an organized manner. Around forty columns were published. They addressed sensitive topics such as Ndengler, the coal-fired power plant, and other issues of national interest,” he explains. In his view, Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s role in structuring Pastef is undeniable: “When people say he is one of the architects of the party, it’s a fact. From the diaspora, we were fully aware of this,” he affirms. Speaking about the relationship between Ousmane Sonko and Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Lamine Niang recalls that the latter was deeply committed to the Pastef leader: “Diomaye was very attached to Sonko. He was always at the forefront of defending Sonko and the party.” "If he accomplished all this work, it's because Sonko knew he was the best person to do it," he emphasizes.
Despite the current difficulties, he invites activists not to lose sight of Pastef's founding values: "There are problems today, but we must not forget the principles that have made the party strong," he insists.
The managing director of Le Soleil newspaper describes the head of state as a leader loyal to his staff: “President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is grateful and very loyal. He's not the type to only pay attention to people when he needs them. He knows the coordinators and local leaders and doesn't hesitate to congratulate them when they do good work,” he testifies. According to him, this close relationship with party members continues to this day: “He remembers everyone and maintains ties with party leaders. Many Pastef activists still support him. As a former secretary general, he would answer messages, return missed calls, and remain available. That's the behavior of a good manager. The party's values remain essential,” concludes Lamine Niang.
