Du symbole du parapluie à la phrase choc : Tout ce qu'il faut retenir de la naissance du parti de Diomaye Faye
On Saturday, July 25, 2026, during a founding general assembly that resembled a national refounding, the Diomaye President coalition officially transformed into a unified political party called "Kiiraay, the Fatherland First." Before an audience of political leaders, government members, elected officials, and numerous activists, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, supported by key figures such as Aminata Touré, Moussa Balla Fofana, and Abdoulaye Tine, sealed the birth of this new formation intended to support and structure the presidential majority.
The metaphor of the "Diombo" and the responsibility of power
Speaking at this inaugural meeting, which carried significant symbolic weight, the Head of State placed a break with the past, responsibility, and the strengthening of republican institutions at the heart of his approach. Addressing coalition leaders and activists from all regions, Bassirou Diomaye Faye presented this new structure as "a common home." He was careful to reframe individual ambitions, declaring: "Titles will come later, as will positions. But today, we are founding a common home."
Invoking his childhood memories in a farming family, the President shared the analogy of the "Diombo," a plant that resembles millet during its growth but produces no grain at harvest time. Through this evocative image, he issued a direct warning to the political class: "Time is the most honest of judges. In the end, it separates what nourishes from what occupies, what builds from what promises, and what serves from what fails."
Highlighting the difference in demands between yesterday's political struggles and today's public affairs management, the Head of State emphasized: "When you are in opposition, you are responsible for nothing. But when you wield power, you are responsible for everything." He stressed the broad scope of his presidency, declaring: "I am the president of all Senegalese," emphasizing the primacy of the general interest and the fact that national stability rests exclusively on strong republican institutions, not on slogans.
Symbolism of the umbrella, sovereignty and homage to Cheikh Anta Diop
The new party "Kiiraay, la Patrie d'abord" (Kiiraay, the Fatherland First) presents itself as a group of "republican patriots" focused on national unity and the defense of the Nation's interests. Its visual identity is based on three fundamental symbols: the umbrella (or Kiiraay), evoking protection, shelter, solidarity, and collective responsibility in Senegalese traditions; the closed fist containing the map of Senegal, embodying the strength, determination, and primacy of the Republic; and finally, the laurel wreath, a symbol of victory, wisdom, and sovereignty already present on the national coat of arms.
In line with the strategic orientations of the Senegal 2050 Agenda, the party places the strengthening of food, energy, economic, and cultural sovereignty at the heart of its priorities. The initiators notably recalled the thought of Professor Cheikh Anta Diop in the preface to his book, *Nations nègres et culture* (Black Nations and Culture), emphasizing that a people can only preserve its identity by reconnecting with its historical and cultural heritage.
The call of the allies: A historic merger to transcend mere patriotism
Several leading figures from the majority party offered their insights into the party's ideological foundations and organization. Former Prime Minister Aminata Touré described the event as a historic turning point, highlighting the unprecedented merger of various parties, citizen movements, and associations into a single bloc. "We are building a political force at the service of Senegal," she stated, praising this republican unity effort aimed at ensuring the sustainability of the transformative reforms.
For his part, Moussa Balla Fofana emphasized the shift from activism to active state action: “To be a patriot is to have the nation in one's heart. But that is not enough.” According to him, love of country must be accompanied by a republican commitment geared towards wealth creation, employment, and public sector reform. He also paid tribute to the leadership of the President of the Republic, stating that “President Diomaye knows how to listen, support, and above all, understand his colleagues.”
Reflecting on the legal and political steps that led to this launch, from the mission letter of November 11, 2025, to the General Assembly of March 7, 2026, and the review of the statutes last week, Mr. Abdoulaye Tine recalled the movement's grassroots origins. Referring to the 2024 victory with 54.58% of the vote in the first round, he stated: "We had a weapon they didn't have: the truth. We had a force they couldn't buy: the people."
Recalling that the conquest of power is only worthwhile through the concrete transformation it brings about, Mr. Abdoulaye Tine warned the activists about the groundwork that is beginning: "The party will not be built in a day, nor in a single speech. It will be built on the ground."
