Élan Solidaire charge Ousmane Sonko
The divorce between Ousmane Sonko and some of his former supporters appears to be final. In a scathing statement, the Élan Solidaire collective, composed of young people and women who once supported the former Prime Minister in his political struggle, denounces his "contradictions," questions his record as Prime Minister, and accuses him of once again trying to exploit Senegalese youth. The message is unequivocal: "Nothing will ever be the same again."
Ousmane Sonko faces a new wave of criticism
“The Élan Solidaire collective followed with great regret the press conference of former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. Through his statements, the collective notes a confused and contradictory stance, particularly when he now claims to be concerned about the fate of the Senegalese people, while several decisions taken under his responsibility at the Prime Minister's office have raised serious concerns about their social and economic consequences,” reads a statement from the collective.
This time, the attacks come from young people and women who claim to have once championed his fight for change. According to the group, the former head of government cannot now present himself as a defender of purchasing power without being held accountable for the decisions he made while in office.
Élan Solidaire specifically mentions the suspensions or reductions of family security grants denounced by beneficiaries, the difficulties related to the payment of student grants, as well as the deductions from the salaries of striking teachers.
On the economic front, the group also criticizes taxation, particularly the 1% tax on certain transactions, as well as measures targeting gambling, sports betting, and alcohol. It accuses Ousmane Sonko of now denouncing a tax burden whose foundations he himself helped to create.
Private jets, presidential plane: Élan Solidaire pits Sonko against Al Aminou Lô
The criticisms don't stop there. The group also questions the former Prime Minister about the management of public resources, particularly regarding the use of the Casamance Development Support Fund for the acquisition of vehicles.
He also questions the cost of some of Ousmane Sonko's official trips, citing private jet travel to Abu Dhabi, Turkey and China, as well as the alleged use of the presidential plane for a political trip to Italy.
Conversely, Élan Solidaire highlights the current Prime Minister, Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo, whose use of commercial flights for certain trips, particularly to Guinea and Ivory Coast, it applauds.
The group then poses a deliberately provocative question: between Ousmane Sonko and Al Aminou Lo, who truly embodies patriotism and restraint in the management of public funds?
"The 2021 episode will not be repeated."
But it is above all on the political front that the statement takes on the appearance of a definitive break. Presenting itself as a group of former supporters of the Pastef leader, Élan Solidaire expresses its profound disappointment at what it considers a betrayal of promises of good governance, transparency, and a break with the past.
The group accuses Ousmane Sonko of trying to establish himself as the sole arbiter of patriotism and warns that this stance will no longer resonate with a youth now, in their view, aware of the political stakes. "The 2021 episode will not be repeated," they warn, before adding: "Nothing will ever be the same again."
For its members, no young person should now sacrifice their studies, their job, their peace of mind or their future to serve the personal ambitions of a political leader.
The group believes that the real emergencies for Senegalese youth remain employment, training, purchasing power and dignity, far removed from partisan disputes and political mobilizations.
Élan Solidaire thus announces its intention to fully play its role in civic oversight and to denounce any attempt to manipulate young people, regardless of its origin. "Senegal belongs to its citizens and not to one man or one political clan," the collective insists, calling on young people and women to no longer give any leader carte blanche.
A particularly harsh attack against Ousmane Sonko, summarized by this final, warning-like statement: "The break must not be a slogan. It must be translated into actions."
