2027 Local Elections: The CDS warns of a possible postponement and demands respect for the republican timetable

With less than six months until the end of the term for departmental and municipal councilors, the Confederation for Democracy and Socialism (CDS) is raising its voice. In a press release published on August 13, 2026, the coalition denounces the "silence and inaction" of the government and fears a postponement of the upcoming local elections.

The CDS is concerned about what it sees as a delay in preparing for the upcoming departmental and municipal elections. With just over five months to go, the coalition believes the authorities have still not initiated the necessary steps to ensure the elections can take place.

She points out that the last local elections took place on January 23, 2022, and that the term of office for departmental and municipal councillors expires on January 22, 2027. However, she emphasizes, no exceptional revision of the electoral lists has been announced, no decree setting the date of the election has yet been issued, and no preparatory operations have, to her knowledge, been undertaken.

The CDS fears a postponement

The Confederation believes this situation fuels concerns about the government's willingness to postpone the elections. It maintains that, in the absence of exceptional circumstances, nothing would justify changing the election date.

The coalition also points out that, even if the timetable is changed, the elections should, according to its interpretation of the applicable provisions, be held during the fifth year of the mandate, i.e. between January 23, 2026 and January 22, 2027.

The CDS goes further by accusing the government of engaging in a logic that could lead to a violation of the Electoral Code and the continued use of councillors whose mandates have expired.

"The republican calendar must not depend on a political agenda."

In its statement, the Confederation mainly criticizes what it considers to be a desire by the government to control the electoral calendar at its convenience.

"The republican calendar must not be dependent on the political agenda of any political party, camp, or person," she insists, deeming such an approach "unacceptable and intolerable in a state of law and in a democracy that respects itself."

Faced with this situation, the Conference of Leaders of the CDS makes three demands: strict adherence to the republican calendar, the opening of essential pre-electoral operations and the holding of inclusive consultations with all stakeholders.

The stated objective, according to the coalition, is to guarantee "free, democratic and fair" elections, as well as transparency and regularity in the electoral process.

Through this statement, the CDS intends to put pressure on the authorities as a major election approaches and calls for the rapid opening of the preparatory process.
