Elections territoriales : 20 organisations alertent sur le calendrier à cinq mois de l’échéance
With less than five months until the expiry of the term of office of municipal and departmental councillors, twenty civil society and human rights organisations are calling on the authorities to clarify without delay the timetable for the next territorial elections.
In a statement published this Wednesday, September 2, 2026, they remind us that the councilors elected on January 23, 2022, will reach the end of their five-year term on January 22, 2027. Their renewal must, according to the provisions of the Electoral Code, take place within thirty days preceding this deadline.
However, according to the signatories, several preparatory operations remain to be undertaken, specified or made public: date of the vote, electoral calendar, revision of the lists, deposit, filing and control of candidacies or even logistical preparation.
For these organizations, the issue is not to conclude that the upcoming election will be irregular, but to prevent a delay in one stage of the process from jeopardizing subsequent stages. They are specifically calling for the swift publication of a detailed timetable and regular updates to political parties, civil society, and citizens.
"Predictability of the electoral calendar is a condition of trust," they stress, believing that transparency and respect for legal deadlines are essential to guarantee credible and peaceful territorial elections.
Signatories of this declaration include COSCE, the NGO-3D, the Forum of the Justiciable, RADDHO, the Senegalese League for Human Rights, Africa Jom Center and Citizen Dialogue.
