Élections territoriales : le FDR exige une concertation immédiate face à un calendrier électoral compromis
The Front for the Defense of Democracy and the Republic (FDR) has raised its voice on the issue of respecting the timetable for the upcoming territorial elections. According to the Conference of Leaders, the Front has been warning for several months now about the threats to holding the scheduled date of the next territorial elections.
"The Minister of the Interior then in office, in charge of elections, responding to a letter from the Front dated March 6, 2026, had assured that the election would be held within the time limits provided for in application of the first paragraph of articles L.236 and L.269 of the electoral law, adding that the President of the Republic was within the time limits to sign the relevant decree," the members claim.
The FDR maintains that the electoral calendar is clearly now largely compromised. The Front details several legal deadlines which, according to them, cannot be met. “Pursuant to Articles L.247 and L.282 of the electoral law, the Minister of the Interior must set the deposit no later than August 20, 2026, after consultation with political stakeholders. Similarly, pursuant to Articles L.248 and L.283 of the electoral law, the lists of candidates for the departmental and municipal elections should be submitted between October 24 and 29, 2026; and the voters, in accordance with Article L.294 of the electoral code, summoned no later than October 19, 2026. It is further added that, in accordance with Article L.37 of the electoral law, an ordinary revision should have been organised since February 1, 2026 or, failing that, an exceptional revision of the electoral lists should have been proposed, concurrently with the decree setting the date of the elections,” he lists.
For them, this inaction, which they describe as likely deliberate on the part of the government, makes it difficult to organize these elections before January 17, 2027, the deadline stipulated by the electoral law. The Front maintains that no circumstance other than partisan political will necessitates a postponement to another time in 2027.
They point out that democracy also relies on respecting electoral rules, holding elections on time, and taking into account the popular will. According to the Front, the current situation, marked by a clear intention to effectively postpone the election, fosters uncertainty and confusion, and risks leading to an illegal extension of territorial mandates.
The Front reports that respecting the electoral calendar is a constitutional and democratic requirement that applies to all public authorities.
“Consequently, the Front for the Defense of Democracy and the Republic calls on the vital forces of the Nation, political parties, civil society organizations, and all citizens to demand the immediate opening of consultations between the government and political actors, in order to guarantee strict respect for the Electoral Code and the electoral calendar. For the FDR, the credibility of the electoral process, the legitimacy of territorial institutions, and the preservation of the rule of law in Senegal are at stake,” the Conference of Leaders stated.
