Fusion du Grand Parti dans Pastef : les militants de Thiès expriment leur ferme opposition
Activists, officials and members of the National Convention of cadres of the Grand Party (GP) in the Thiès region expressed their firm opposition to the alleged merger-absorption of their political formation by Pastef, announced following an agreement signed on June 5, 2026.
In a public statement, they denounced a decision made without consulting the party's relevant bodies and in violation of the procedures stipulated in the statutes. According to them, no meeting of the sovereign bodies nor any democratic consultation with party members was organized to validate such an important decision.
“A political party is not private property nor an object of negotiation between leaders,” asserts Ibra Fall, a member of the party's leadership. These activists emphasize that the Grand Party is a collective organization built around a history, values, and a commitment shared by its members. In their view, the mere telephone consultations mentioned cannot replace a democratic process in accordance with the party's statutes.
The leaders of the GP in Thiès believe that this so-called merger lacks any clearly established political or statutory legitimacy. They also denounce the move as opportunistic and contrary to the party's interests.
Faced with this situation, they affirm their determination to preserve the legal, administrative, and political identity of the Grand Party. "The Grand Party remains the Grand Party," insists Ibra Fall, emphasizing that its structures, statutes, legal existence, and organizational autonomy remain intact.
GP activists in Thiès also announce that they will oppose by all legal means any attempt to make the party disappear or to transfer its representation without a democratic mandate from the activists.
Beyond this internal issue, they advocate for the preservation of political pluralism in Senegal, believing that the country needs strong and independent political parties to meet current economic, social, and institutional challenges. They also denounce certain practices they consider to be abuses of political life, notably the blurring of lines between party and state, the cult of personality, and the weakening of internal democracy.
In conclusion, the activists of the Grand Party of Thiès call on all leaders, executives and activists to remain mobilized to defend the existence and autonomy of their political formation.
"The Great Party will not dissolve through backroom deals. It lives on through its activists, its struggles, and its history. The Great Party remains standing," concluded Ibra Fall.
