« Il ne suffit pas de propos enflammés pour faire un pays » : Samba Sy décrypte le bain de foule de Macky Sall à Dakar
The Secretary General of the Party of Independence and Labor (PIT), Samba Sy, welcomed the visit of former President Macky Sall to Senegal on Friday, July 17, 2026, as part of his campaign for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations. A guest on RFM's Grand Jury program on Sunday, July 19, he stated that this stop in Dakar was important, even if it could have taken place earlier.
“This visit could have taken place earlier in our country if the conditions had been in place. It is fortunate that this is the case today and that the president was able to set foot on Senegalese soil, following in the footsteps of many other countries,” he said.
According to him, Macky Sall "was right to insist on coming to present his candidacy to his fellow citizens, to the President of the Republic." The former Minister of Labor also praised the current Head of State's attitude towards this initiative: "We believe that President Bassirou Diomaye Faye did well to receive his predecessor with such courtesy and civility," he stated.
When asked about the significant crowd reception reserved for the former president upon his return to Senegal, the leader of the PIT urged people not to reduce this popular mobilization to a single political interpretation.
"There are still many Senegalese who thought that President Macky Sall had rendered eminent services to the country," he recalled, before adding that the exercise of power by the new authorities is now pushing part of the public to take a different look at the general situation in the country.
“I believe that eyes are beginning to open and that, deep down, there are indeed many compatriots who are beginning to come back to this conclusion and who now know that it is not enough simply to make a country, to work on it, to transform it,” Mr. Sy firmly stated.
Although he noted a notable "movement" and "change" in public opinion, Samba Sy refrained from any hasty conclusions about the direct political repercussions of this evolution: "What will this mean tomorrow, converted into electoral terms? It is obviously simply the future that will enlighten us," he concluded on RFM radio.
