Incertitude sur les locales de 2027 : le silence de Diomaye Faye passe mal
With six months to go before the departmental and municipal elections scheduled for January 2027, the lack of an electoral calendar is fueling speculation about a possible postponement. According to information reported by Walf Quotidien, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has so far neither convened the electorate nor launched the exceptional revision of the electoral lists, which is nevertheless required before the elections.
When questioned by the newspaper, Ndiaga Sylla, an electoral expert and president of the Citizen Dialogue, pointed out that with the term of local elected officials expiring on January 23, 2027, the law mandates that elections be held within thirty days of that date. Therefore, "in the absence of legislative intervention modifying the term of office or postponing the election," the elections must be held no later than January 22, 2027.
In the pages of the Front de Terre press group's daily newspaper, Zahra Iyane Thiam, a former minister under Macky Sall and member of the New Responsibility party, expresses concern that the election has been "postponed indefinitely without any official explanation." She denounces this climate of uncertainty, stating that "this silence and lack of a timetable are dangerously reminiscent of the maneuvers surrounding the early legislative elections of 2024."
Impatience is also palpable among other political parties. Quoted by the same source, Moustapha Ndiaye, a Pastef city councilor, is demanding a swift response from the executive branch: “We demand that President Bassirou Diomaye Faye sign the decree convening the electorate and immediately begin the revision of the electoral lists. Adherence to the electoral calendar is a democratic imperative.”
Faced with this inaction, electoral expert Ndiaga Sylla finally warns that civil society will not remain inactive: "If the competent authorities do not quickly clarify this situation, we will initiate appropriate legal proceedings before the competent courts to ensure the protection of the right to vote and respect for the requirements of the Electoral Code, the Constitution and Senegal's international commitments."
