JOJ 2026 : « Si c’est cela une dette cachée, le Sénégal en a encore besoin », une association défend le bilan de Macky Sall
In an official statement issued from Italy and sent to the Seneweb newsroom the day after the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, the Association of Senegalese in the Diaspora congratulated the nation on the historic success of the event. Beyond the sporting triumph, the organization also entered the national socio-economic debate, making a strong case for republican continuity and the relevance of the major investments initiated under the previous administration.
For representatives of the Senegalese community abroad, the major facilities that hosted the event — the Maître-Abdoulaye-Wade Stadium, the Dakar Arena complex, the Tour de l'Œuf, the renovated Olympic swimming pool, the Léopold-Sédar-Senghor Stadium, not forgetting the TER and the BRT — are “facilities and infrastructures available thanks to an enlightened vision of former President Macky Sall”.
The organization highlights the pioneering role and resilience of the former head of state in bringing this Olympic project to fruition: “Recognizing the efforts made by President Macky Sall, which secured Senegal’s bid over several other countries, was a necessary part of the ceremony. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and global conflicts, nothing prevented the financing and organization of the Games, thanks to his commitment to showcasing Senegal to the world.”
Entering the public finance controversy, the diaspora openly defends projects funded under the previous administration: "For us, the association, if this is what constitutes a hidden debt, then Senegal needs many more hidden debts to build yet more infrastructure to serve the people. What was once the subject of debate and controversy is now being tested by its achievements, its usefulness, and its visibility."
The association also welcomed the speech by the president of the National Organising Committee for the Games (COJOJ), Mamadou Diagna Ndiaye, for recalling the continuity of the State by expressing his gratitude to Macky Sall for the initial impetus, while thanking President Bassirou Diomaye Faye for ensuring the continuation of the process until its completion.
“This mutual recognition illustrates a fundamental requirement in any vibrant democracy: national achievements must not be held hostage by political changes. One president initiates, another continues, and ultimately it is the nation that reaps the rewards of collective effort,” the diaspora emphasized, describing the continuity of the state as a “republican necessity.” In conclusion, the Association of Senegalese in the Diaspora extended its congratulations to the Senegalese people and to current and past authorities, establishing Dakar 2026 as a source of shared national pride.
