Kédougou : La vague de ralliements à Kiiray–Les patriotes républicains s’intensifie, plusieurs maires invoquent « l’intérêt général »
The political momentum in favor of Kiiray–The Republican Patriots, the new party led by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, continues to gain ground in the Kédougou region. Several mayors have officially joined this new political formation, stating that they place the interests of the people above partisan considerations.
In the department of Salémata, the six mayors of the communes of Oubadji, Éthiolo, Salémata, Dar Salam, Kévoye and Dakatély signed their membership in the Diomaye President coalition, now structured around Kiiray–The Republican Patriots.
The movement is just as noticeable in the department of Kédougou, where the mayors of Dindéfélo, Ninéfécha, Bandafassi, Tomboronkoto, Dimboli and Fongolimbi have also decided to join the new presidential party.
At this stage, only the mayor of Kédougou remains in the ranks of the Alliance for the Republic (APR).
In Saraya County, political realignment also appears to be underway. The mayors of Sabodala and Khossanto are reportedly close to Kiiray–The Republican Patriots.
However, they say they want to consult their supporters before making any official statement. The name of the mayor of Medina Baffé is also mentioned among the elected officials likely to take this step.
Conversely, the mayors of Bembou and Missirah Sirimana remain, for the time being, loyal to the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS). The president of the Saraya departmental council, for his part, had already officially announced his allegiance to the party of the head of state.
"Acting in the interest of the people"
Beyond political affiliations, several elected officials emphasize the need to prioritize the development of their communities. For the mayor of Dimboli, "our decision is not directed against anyone. It primarily reflects a desire to work in perfect synergy with the authorities in order to accelerate the implementation of projects expected by our people. The general interest must always take precedence over individual or partisan interests."
Fodé Keïta continued: “Citizens judge us on our ability to improve their living conditions. If closer ties with the ruling party facilitate the implementation of infrastructure projects, access to water, health, or education, then it is our responsibility to act accordingly.”
For Kamissa Kamara, mayor of Salémata and regional coordinator of Diomaye Président, this choice is part of a logic of institutional stability: “We were elected to serve our municipalities. Our commitment remains the same: to defend the interests of the people and to support any initiative likely to bring more development to our territory.”
A new regional political map
These successive defections reflect a profound reshaping of the political landscape in the Kédougou region. In just a few weeks, the majority of mayors from the departments of Salémata and Kédougou have joined the new political party of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, while several other elected officials from Saraya may follow suit.
If this dynamic is confirmed in the coming days, Kiiray–The Republican Patriots could quickly become the main local political force, permanently reshaping the political balance in the Kédougou region.
