Diomaye Faye - Ousmane Sonko : le duel est lancé
The launch of Kiiraay – The Republican Patriots by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye marks a clear break with his former mentor, Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly and leader of Pastef. L'Observateur notes that the Head of State is already claiming Kiiraay as the "leading party in Senegal," thus challenging Pastef's political dominance. In response, Ousmane Sonko expressed his eagerness to "see, at the ballot box, the true balance of power" between the two camps in the upcoming elections.
The daily newspaper of the Future Media Group highlights the strengths that Bassirou Diomaye Faye possesses in this new political battle. Analyst Sidy Diop, interviewed by the same source, stated, "Bassirou Diomaye Faye has an advantage that few leaders can claim when launching a party. [...] He wields power." According to him, the presidential office gives the head of state a strong appeal, reinforced by "a calm temperament," a "conciliatory discourse," and a desire to place Kiiraay "under the banner of the Republic"—all elements likely to attract moderate voters, technocrats, and local officials, several of whom have already joined the new party.
However, L'Observateur notes that Pastef retains strong assets. In the same publication, political scientist Saliou Ngom believes that "at this stage, nothing suggests that Pastef is losing ground," recalling that "no major figure in the party has defected" and that the party "remains the country's main political force." For his part, Sidy Diop considers that "Pastef's challenge is unprecedented, because its main competitor does not come from the ranks of the opposition, but from within its own ranks," both parties claiming the legacy of the "break" promised by the 2024 elections and appealing to the same electorate.
The newspaper also points out that Kiiraay's emergence could reshuffle the cards within the opposition by attracting figures hostile to Ousmane Sonko but favorable to the president. Both analysts agree, however, on one point: only the outcome of the next elections, particularly the 2027 local elections, will determine whether Bassirou Diomaye Faye or Ousmane Sonko now best embodies the promise of change brought about by the 2024 transition.
