Lansana Gagny Sakho : « Ousmane Sonko n'a jamais choisi la République, on a tenté de manipuler les magistrats »
A former close associate of Ousmane Sonko and now involved with Kiiraay, the party led by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Lansana Gagny Sakho strongly criticized the Speaker of the National Assembly. A guest on the RFM Matin program, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of APIX discussed the reasons for his distancing himself from Sonko, while defending his stated choice to support republican institutions.
According to him, he had joined the political project at the time because of the men who embodied it. After the change of government, he claims to have declined an offer to head the water and sanitation sector in order to remain true to his convictions. " I didn't want to put positions before my principles. This allowed me to leave easily. From the beginning, I chose the Republic ," he explained.
Conversely, Lansana Gagny Sakho believes that Ousmane Sonko " never chose the Republic ." He criticizes him for fueling divisions at the highest levels of government through certain public statements. He cites, in particular, a declaration made while President Bassirou Diomaye Faye was on official trips to the United States and then China, during which Sonko denounced a lack of authority in the country. These remarks, according to Sakho, greatly embarrassed the head of state.
For the former ally of the Pastef leader, the real political choice lies in preserving institutions and improving the functioning of the state. While acknowledging that difficulties have existed " on both sides ," he believes that significant progress has been made, particularly in the justice sector.
Lansana Gagny Sakho also addressed the changes at the Ministry of Justice. He recalled that the former Minister of Justice, Ousmane Diagne, had declared before the National Assembly that no one could manipulate him. According to him, his replacement was intended to install a more compliant minister in order to influence the magistrates.
“ But that was without understanding that judges are anything but puppets ,” he argued. In his view, attempts to manipulate the judiciary, which can be raised when one is in the opposition, clash with the realities of exercising power. “ When you’re in the opposition, you don’t always fully grasp the responsibilities of the state. Once in power, the realities are different. I think that’s what the president wants to demonstrate ,” he concluded.
