«Le Lansana de 2022 ou le Gagny de 2026 ?» La question de Ndiack Lakh, président du Penc
The president of the Penc movement, Ndiack Lakh, has spoken out following Lansana Gagny Sakho's recent statements about Ousmane Sonko. In a statement, he argues that the current positions of the chairman of the board of directors of Apix contrast sharply with those he defended when he joined Pastef.
“In a democracy, everyone is free to change their mind,” he emphasizes. However, he believes that such a profound change warrants explanation, especially when it comes after such strong public pronouncements.
The head of the Penc party brought up several statements made by Gagny Sakho. According to him, in July 2022, when he joined Pastef, he declared that he shared "the same vision" as Ousmane Sonko, whom he described as "a very humble person".
Ndiack Lakh recalls that Mr. Sakho then displayed his willingness to "support him for 2024 and for the legislative elections", while affirming that Senegal needed "transformational leadership" capable of setting the country on a new trajectory.
Ndiack Lakh also recalls that in 2023, Lansana Gagny Sakho publicly responded to Abdourahmane Diouf by presenting Ousmane Sonko as "the original," and said that a copy can never resemble the original.
The president of the Penc party also cited a televised address in which Lansana Gagny Sakho defended the call for resistance launched by the Pastef leader. "Sonko did well to call for resistance, otherwise he would be in prison," he had declared.
According to Ndiack Lakh, these positions are difficult to reconcile with the recent statements of Lansana Gagny Sakho, who now criticizes the "logics of confrontation", insists on the need to preserve institutional stability and questions the economic competence of Ousmane Sonko.
“Changing one’s opinion is a right. But when a man has been presented as a visionary, humble, and bearer of the leadership that Senegal needed, the least one can do is explain at what precise moment the original became the problem,” he argues.
Beyond the case of Lansana Gagny Sakho, Ndiack Lakh believes this development illustrates a broader trend in Senegalese political life. He deplores the increasingly frequent repositioning , where "yesterday's adversaries become today's allies, certainties are overturned without explanation, and betrayals are rebranded as strategy or political realism."
For the president of Le Penc, this normalization of reversals gradually undermines citizens' trust in public discourse. "A democracy does not progress when memories fade. It progresses when words are binding, when positions are taken seriously, and when reversals are explained, " he asserts .
Finally, Ndiack Lakh asks: "Who should we believe? The Lansana of 2022 or the Gagny of 2026?" This question goes beyond the career of a single political leader and refers more broadly to consistency, responsibility and fidelity to convictions in the exercise of public life.
"The wind is free to change direction. So are weather vanes. Political courage is standing tall when everything pushes you to your knees," he concludes.
