Poste de Sg de l’Onu : Macky Sall n’est plus le seul candidat africain
Macky Sall is no longer the only African candidate vying for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN). Uganda has just submitted the candidacy of Mr. Olara Otunnu. The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Uganda to the United Nations forwarded his application yesterday, Friday, July 24, 2026.
A former United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, Mr. Otunnu has over forty years of experience within the United Nations system and the international community.
"As the first Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict (1998-2005), he placed the protection of children affected by war on the agenda of the Security Council and designed the monitoring and oversight regime adopted by Security Council resolution 1612 (2005), which is still in force," his nomination file states.
This document indicates that Mr. Otunnu also served as Uganda's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (1980-1985). He also held high-ranking positions, including Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uganda and President of the International Peace Academy (now the International Peace Institute).
"His candidacy demonstrates the breadth of his experience, his political acumen and his ability to build consensus, qualities that the Republic of Uganda considers essential to the Office of the Secretary-General at this stage of the crisis," said his country, which has formalized his application.
