Rentrée parlementaire : Ousmane Sonko dénonce « le coût de l’opacité » et alerte sur la proportion de la dette cachée au peuple
At the start of the parliamentary session on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, emphasized the economic and social consequences of a lack of transparency in public finance management. Between overbilling, misdirected investments, and debt exceeding reported figures, he believes that the population, particularly the most vulnerable, is paying the price for these governance failures.
“We know that opacity has a cost, and we are experiencing the cost of opacity today in Senegal.” Ousmane Sonko placed the issue of transparency at the heart of his speech during the parliamentary session opening on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
For the Speaker of the National Assembly, the consequences of a lack of transparency extend far beyond the political sphere. They directly affect the national economy and the living conditions of citizens. "When decisions escape all effective control, markets become overpriced. Investments are lost," he stated.
Beyond the budget lines and the state's financial commitments, Ousmane Sonko urges consideration of the concrete consequences of the choices made. He mentioned the child waiting for a classroom, the mother unable to afford prescribed medication, and the farmer hoping for the completion of a hydro-agricultural development project.
The Speaker of the National Assembly also cited flooding as one of the consequences facing the population. He argued that every wasted public resource represents a loss of funds that could be allocated to schools, medicine, wells, and job creation. "These aren't just numbers that disappear. These are schools, medicine, wells, and jobs," he emphasized, stressing that the squandering of public funds jeopardizes prospects for progress and development.
Public debt: Sonko responds to the revelations of the Court of Auditors
The Speaker of Parliament paid particular attention to the issue of public debt. He noted that the Court of Auditors' report on public finances had revealed a level of debt and a deficit significantly higher than previously reported figures. Ousmane Sonko indicated that these findings had been validated and confirmed by development partners, particularly financial partners.
According to him, this situation has reduced the state's room for maneuver, impacting its ability to meet the needs of the population. "A debt the people are unaware of and a guardianship that dares not speak its name," he declared, denouncing the lack of transparency surrounding the country's financial commitments.
For Mr. Sonko, the issue of debt is therefore not limited to macroeconomic indicators. It also relates to citizens' ability to understand the commitments made on their behalf and to assess their impact on public policies.

Bizzare.
