Révision constitutionnelle : Le chef de l'État saisit les 7 Sages pour faire annuler le vote de l'Assemblée nationale
The institutional standoff has officially begun before the country's highest court. On Monday, July 6, 2026, Cheikh Ahmadou Ndiaye, a lawyer acting on behalf of the President of the Republic, appeared before the Constitutional Council. He formally filed an appeal of unconstitutionality challenging the constitutional revision procedure adopted by the National Assembly.
The Head of State has launched a full-scale attack on the regularity of parliamentary proceedings, citing a "violation of the procedure for the constitutional revision of Law No. 18/2026 of the National Assembly dated June 29, 2026." Given the gravity of the situation, the President of the Republic has accompanied his referral with a declaration of urgency. Pursuant to the organic laws governing the Constitutional Council, he requests a thorough examination of his petition "within eight (8) days."
To substantiate its claims, the executive branch submitted numerous supporting documents, including the cited legislation, official correspondence with the President of the National Assembly, and bailiff's reports. The file also includes USB drives containing audio and video recordings of the plenary session debates to substantiate the alleged irregularities. The members of the Constitutional Council now have one week to issue their ruling.
