«Sept mille raisons d’y croire» : le fils de Madiambal Diagne solde ses comptes avec Sonko
In a well-titled editorial published this Monday, "Seven Thousand Reasons to Believe," celebrating the 7,000th issue of "Le Quotidien," Serigne Saliou Diagne, administrator of the Avenir Communication group, publisher of the paper, urges his readers to maintain their faith in this newspaper launched in 2003. The son of Madiambal, the media outlet's founder, didn't hesitate to settle scores with the president of Pastef "and his henchmen," pointing to the "agenda" he attributes to them, "aimed at dismantling and destroying the private press." We offer you the full text of his article.
"Dear reader, you are holding in your hands the 7,000th issue of this newspaper. This publication has come a long way in meeting the challenge of providing the Senegalese public with accurate and truthful information, critical analysis, and a platform for debate for all voices. All ideas, trends, and factions in Senegal find in Le Quotidien a receptacle and a forum to express themselves. Every citizen concerned with the proper functioning of democracy sees that Le Quotidien is a witness to the living history of the country. All the major milestones in our nation's development have been covered and commented on in the best possible way, with a focus on ethics, transparency, respect for the public interest, and the preservation of our country's republican model. In economics, sports, politics, and culture, the information delivered by Le Quotidien has never been questioned, despite the numerous accusations of bias and caricatures leveled against us."
It is gratifying to note that, as we enter our 24th year of publication, consistency in our stances, unwavering principles, uncompromising arguments, and outspokenness remain values as dear to the newspaper as they were to its founding. Steering the ship has been challenging, but the adventure continues despite all the underhanded tactics and malicious attempts to derail us. This newspaper has faced opposition at every level, but it has found resilience in the courage and loyalty of its staff, the unwavering dedication of its founder, and the support of partners and anonymous individuals who see in Le Quotidien a watchdog playing its part in the grand democratic process for our nation.
Those who wanted to bet on the death of this title, poorly hiding their eagerness as adversaries who shouted their joy everywhere at seeing this newspaper undermined by an agenda against the private press in Senegal, with the advent of Sonko and his henchmen, are beginning to change their tune.
Their malicious glee may not have lasted long, but the agenda aimed at dismantling and destroying the private press has left many scars. Service invoices from public institutions explicitly requesting that Le Quotidien not be paid , as well as the discrimination and exclusion of our publication during the last distribution of the Press Aid and Support Fund (FADP), not to mention the boycott in certain government communication circles, have all contributed to hindering this newspaper.
"If I have one regret, it is the weakening of the socio-economic situation of all our employees. Overnight, the group found itself in unprecedented situations that demotivated many people, frustrated the majority, and shook several members, even within their families."
After two years, we can say that the mastermind behind this enterprise and his foot soldiers look quite ridiculous, now that the tables have turned and they are trying to absolve themselves of all the wrongs they may have committed. Now that they are no longer in power, these executioners want to show their contrition to the point of wanting to embrace us. How ridiculous can become a grease that the devil smears himself with without flinching when he is wrong! Time, which is the best judge, will restore us to our truths.
If I have one regret, it is the weakening of the socio-economic situation of all our employees and the instability that all the setbacks experienced over the past two years have created in the stable management and development of this publication. Overnight, the group found itself in unprecedented situations that demotivated many people, frustrated the majority, and shook several members, even within their families. Efforts are underway to rectify this situation and allow us to move forward with confidence once again.
My gratitude to all our staff during these turbulent times. Thank you to our loyal advertisers who didn't abandon Le Quotidien when it was hardest to get close to us. My deepest appreciation to the readers who, edition after edition, allow this newspaper to thrive and uphold its promise of democratic and republican ideals. My tribute to all the columnists who, through their work, help elevate the exchange of ideas in our country to unprecedented heights, after a decade of the dumbing down of public discourse and the degradation of republican debate in favor of populist voices and all manner of imposture.
This issue you hold in your hands is further motivation that there are 7,000 reasons to believe. Seven thousand reasons to move forward, seven thousand reasons to keep democracy alive and save the Republic, seven thousand reasons to fight arbitrariness and block populism. Seven thousand ways to think freely and proclaim loudly that unvarnished knowledge remains the most effective weapon. Yesterday's promise is today's promise in these pages, ' Boul Ragal Darra '. Here's to 7,000 more issues of the newspaper Le Quotidien !
