Seydi Gassama : "L’imposture d’un activiste drapé dans le manteau des Droits de l’Homme" (ancienne députée de la Cedeao Maïmouna Sène)
“For several years, Mr. Seydi Gassama had accustomed us to selective stances. But his latest threatening, vindictive, and disconcertingly flippant media appearance definitively crosses the line. By setting himself up as a self-proclaimed prosecutor, giving orders to the Head of State, and insulting President Macky Sall’s record, the Executive Director of Amnesty International Senegal has dropped the mask: he is no longer a civil society actor; he has become a political opponent on a mission.”
These remarks come from Maïmouna Sène, a former Senegalese and ECOWAS parliamentarian and member of the National Executive Secretariat of the Alliance for the Republic (APR). She continued: “Let’s be clear: Mr. Gassama has neither the moral authority, nor the democratic legitimacy, nor the institutional mandate to dictate Senegal’s foreign policy. Senegal’s diplomatic history is not written under the influence of emotion or militant demands.”
She emphasizes that "President Macky Sall's leadership, praised across all continents, particularly during his presidency of the African Union where he successfully led Africa's integration into the G20, is a concrete reality and a source of pride for our nation. His vision for peace, stability, and development on the African continent aligns precisely with the three fundamental pillars of the United Nations Charter invoked by Mr. Gassama. Macky Sall has elevated Senegal's diplomatic leadership to an unprecedented level."
For Maïmouna Sène, “whether Mr. Gassama likes it or not, the stature of a statesman of his stature cannot be measured by the grievances of a local activist.” She reminds us that “the whole world knows President Macky Sall’s worth, rigor, and experience in serving global peace at the United Nations.” And that “no one has a monopoly on compassion for the tragedies that have befallen our country.”
But she noted: “To claim to judge, condemn, and politically execute a statesman based on media shortcuts and personal grudges is extremely serious. Justice is neither a court of public opinion nor the exclusive domain of social media activists. It is exercised within the serenity of republican institutions.” For the former member of parliament, the role of a true human rights defender is to demand institutional justice, respecting the presumption of innocence and the facts, and not to hand out sentences on social media to generate buzz.
She observes that “Amnesty International is a respectable organization, but its image in Senegal is currently being held hostage by the militant excesses of its local representative. Mr. Gassama has definitively traded the neutrality and rigor of an observer for the stance of a propagandist.” She adds: “He should have the courage to resign from Amnesty International, create his own political party, or buy a PASTEF membership card and come face the Senegalese people in the democratic arena, instead of hiding behind the acronym of an international NGO to settle his scores!”
The former member of parliament called on Mr. Seydi Gassama to "immediately regain the restraint and sense of proportion required by his position, or to fully embrace his role as a political activist." She reiterated that Senegal demands integrity, dignity, and respect for its institutions. The Republic, she stated, needs serenity and truth, not invective or militant pronouncements.
“We will not allow anyone, and especially not an attention-seeking activist, to trample on the honor, record, and prestige of President Macky Sall and the APR,” warns the former Senegalese and ECOWAS parliamentarian, a member of the APR’s National Executive Secretariat. According to her, Senegal deserves a debate worthy of its history, far removed from moral blackmail and petty personal grudges.
