Situation socio-politique au Sénégal : La Ligue des Imams et Prédicateurs alerte et demande le respect du calendrier électoral
Meeting in Dakar on August 15, 2026, for the 4th ordinary session of their Advisory Council, the members of the League of Imams and Preachers of Senegal (LIPS) released their closing statement. The religious leaders addressed major national and international issues.
In their statement, the imams firmly reaffirmed their commitment to religious, moral, and cultural values, which they consider the foundation of social cohesion in Senegal. The LIPS (League for the Promotion of Religious and Social Progress) calls on the authorities to continue their efforts to protect public spaces and to rigorously enforce laws prohibiting behaviors deemed contrary to public morals.
Sensitive to the daily difficulties of households, the Advisory Council is raising the alarm about the decline in purchasing power, unemployment and the financial burdens that weigh on the most vulnerable families.
The preachers are calling on the state to strengthen its social support programs and to pay particular attention to farmers and rural communities. They specifically advocate for improved access to fertilizers, agricultural financing, and training to ensure a stronger and more resilient agricultural sector.
On the political front, the LIPS reiterates that the nation's general interest must transcend party rivalries. The imams urge the government to prioritize sincere and constructive dialogue to ease tensions.
Furthermore, the League insists on the obligation for leaders to honor their promises to the people.
Recalling prophetic teachings on the responsibility of leaders, the Council calls on the authorities to scrupulously respect the electoral calendar provided for by law, without any delay or manipulation.
On the international stage, LIPS strongly condemns the military aggressions against the Palestinian, Lebanese, and Iranian peoples, calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities to prevent a regional conflagration. It also welcomes initiatives for common defense within the Muslim world (notably the Mecca Agreement between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan) and hopes for their expansion.
A message of peace and unity
In conclusion, the League of Imams and Preachers reiterates that while differences of opinion are natural, they must never lead to violence or division among citizens. It calls upon the entire political class, religious leaders, and civil society to demonstrate wisdom, restraint, and moderation in order to preserve social peace in Senegal.
