Sonko sur ses relations amicales avec Diomaye : « Pour moi, il est inutile de rester focalisé sur le passé »
"Are you still friends with Bassirou Diomaye Faye? You had chosen him as a substitute candidate for the Presidency of the country. What is your relationship today?" It was with this question that the Al Jazeera journalist Nicolas Haque addressed the president of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, during the interview he granted him.
In response, the Pastef leader retorted: “For me, it’s pointless to dwell on the past. Today, we must manage the present and look towards the future. I believe that destiny plays a role in everything that happens and that God, ultimately, guides our paths. But God acts in very specific ways. In this instance, He entrusted me with the responsibility of choosing my party’s candidate for the presidential election, and I chose a man.” He then clarified, “It was, of course, my personal responsibility. But if it hadn’t been God’s will, I wouldn’t have chosen him. The events of these past two years or so can be judged not only by the Senegalese people, but by the entire world.”
"I prefer not to elaborate too much on this separation."
Regarding the President's remarks a few months earlier, in which he stated, "If there is no longer any trust, I will part ways with him," Ousmane Sonko dismissed the idea of a trust issue. "There was no trust issue. What happened had nothing to do with trust. You know very well the reasons that led to this break. They had nothing to do with trust. I prefer not to elaborate too much on this separation," he declared.
Without going into detail, Ousmane Sonko explained that "every political system is made up of alliances and breakups." He maintains that the split occurred "because we had divergent visions regarding our commitments to the Senegalese people." According to him, it was about the program. "It wasn't about individuals or power. It was about the commitments made to the Senegalese people," he said.
“And how did we separate? In many countries around the world, even in some of the oldest democracies, but especially in Africa, political breaks are often extremely painful and have serious consequences. They frequently lead to unrest that can destabilize a country. What should be noted here is that our separation took place peacefully and calmly, with each of us continuing to assume the responsibilities that the Senegalese people had entrusted to us,” he remarked.
"My concern is to make this National Assembly a truly great institution."
Then he continued: “President Diomaye Faye was elected by the Senegalese people to serve as president. He appointed me Prime Minister, a position I held for a little over two years. I had chosen to continue supporting him for a while. However, our differences eventually led us to part ways. I have now returned to the responsibilities entrusted to me by the Senegalese people, namely leading the National Assembly.”
For the leader of Pastef, today, what concerns him most, and what will mobilize his time and energy, "is to make this National Assembly a truly great institution."
