Tension après l'émission Banc Public : Djibril Beye (Kiraay) victime d'une tentative d'agression
Political debate has reached a worrying new level in the media. Djibril Bèye, a member of the Kiraay party (the political party of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye), was the victim of an attempted physical assault at the Seneweb offices following the broadcast of "Banc Public"—the talk show aired every Friday evening on Seneweb TV . He has officially filed a complaint against persons unknown with the Ouakam gendarmerie brigade. This Saturday, September 12, 2026, he also formally addressed the editors of the publication to denounce these methods of intimidation.
Threats in the elevator and the decisive intervention of security and a PASTEF executive
According to the complaint filed by Djibril Bèye, the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, around 1:30 a.m., just after the recording of the Banc Public program. The Kiraay representative was accosted by an individual who had come to join his fellow panelist for the evening, Rassoul Mbaye, a member of the PASTEF party. The alleged assailant is reportedly a supporter of this same ruling party.
In his statement to the commander of the Ouakam brigade, Djibril Bèye described the scene: “In the elevator, this individual hurled insults and verbal threats at me, and threatened physical violence. Upon exiting the elevator, he attempted to physically attack me with great violence.”
The incident was fortunately brought under control quickly thanks to the collective responsiveness on site. In addition to the firmness of his political opponent from PASTEF, the vigilance of the Seneweb security team was crucial: the guards immediately intervened, allowing Mr. Bèye to escape his assailant's wrath. "Without the immediate intervention of Mr. Rassoul Mbaye, who firmly restrained him and asked me to move away, this attempt would have resulted in physical violence," emphasized the Kiraay member. Djibril Bèye is now requesting access to the CCTV footage from the Seneweb studios, as well as a formal statement from the security guard present, to identify the perpetrator.
"I refuse to remain silent": a solemn appeal to the media
Beyond legal action, Kiraay's executive sent a statement to newsroom managers to warn against the trivialization of political violence on the sets and behind the scenes of the media.
“I ask you to please publish and relay this despicable and dangerous act for democracy, so that no one is unaware of its seriousness and that such actions do not happen again in our media space,” he wrote to the editors.
Refusing to give in to threats, Djibril Bèye insists: “I refuse to give in to fear. I refuse to be silent. I refuse to let intimidation replace reasoned argument. [...] Our country has a great tradition of democratic debate, of hospitality, and of respect for one's opponent. We must never accept that physical violence becomes a mode of political expression.”
By taking legal action, the political leader claims to be acting "not out of revenge, but out of principle," in order to preserve the freedom of expression of all participants in the Senegalese public debate.
