«Un désastre, ce qu’ils font c’est du suicide» : Khalifa Sall alerte sur la façon dont les autorités actuelles empruntent
The handling of the situation stemming from the so-called hidden debt affair is a "real disaster," according to Khalifa Ababacar Sall. Indeed, the Senegalese state is currently borrowing at high rates, particularly to repay its debts, he laments.
"It's a real disaster. The way they're getting into debt is just crazy. You go into debt to repay debts and it's the investment that suffers," Khalifa Sall said on Friday on the set of 7TV.
What the former mayor of Dakar regrets most is that today, the IMF has suspended its program with Senegal and rating agencies are downgrading the country's credit rating. As a result, the state is forced to raise funds on the local market at rates that can exceed 8%. "What they're doing is suicide," he insists.
Moreover, the former mayor of Dakar observes that, since the Pastef regime came to power, "not a single brick" has been laid. "All that has been inaugurated are projects initiated by Macky Sall," he asserts.
For him, those currently in power have only themselves to blame. "Because they have put themselves in a situation where they can only pay salaries and debts. The State is a myth and, if you tear down this myth, you are the ones who suffer first. Today, it is those in power who suffer first," he laments.
For Khalifa Sall, it is necessary to reconnect with partners and move away from rhetoric that could isolate Senegal from those who can help it. "I hear them citing the example of countries that have not accepted debt restructuring. But these countries have other resources that can compensate for the void left by their partners," he says.
According to him, in the case of Senegal, if oil, zircon, gold, and agriculture generated enough resources to allow the country to be self-reliant, the situation could have been less complicated. "But if you don't have those, you're forced to work with partners," he said.
