Mody Niang: Le parcours d’un intellectuel intransigeant
A former schoolteacher who became an education inspector, essayist, and political commentator, Mody Niang dedicated much of his life to education and monitoring public policy. He died on October 17, 2026, at the age of 81, leaving behind the image of a man of conviction, known for his outspokenness and his criticism of Senegalese governance. Mody Niang was one of those people who did not separate writing from civic engagement. A teacher by training and a retired education inspector, he established himself over the decades as a unique voice in Senegalese public debate. His often incisive writing has chronicled the country's political evolution, from the Abdou Diouf years to the presidencies of Abdoulaye Wade and Macky Sall, before his support for the new authorities who emerged from the 2024 transition. Born in 1945 in Koki, in the Louga region, Mody Niang began his teaching career in 1964 as a primary school teacher in Ndiaganiao. He then pursued his studies at the University of Dakar, where he earned a bachelor's degree, before teaching history and geography. His admission to the École Normale Supérieure in Dakar paved the way for his career as an inspector.
From 1981, he worked as an elementary school inspector, a position he held until his retirement in 2003. This long experience within the education system helped shape his perspective on the state, its institutions, and the responsibilities of leaders. But retirement did not mark the end of his commitment. Rather, it offered him a new avenue for expression: writing columns, essays, and contributing to the press.
An uncompromising pen
Mody Niang has particularly distinguished himself through his stances on governance, the management of public funds, corruption, the politicization of the administration, and accountability. In his writings, he regularly contrasts political rhetoric with the actions of those in power. His direct, sometimes harsh, tone has earned him a large readership, but also controversy. He spares neither public figures nor regimes whose practices he deems contrary to the requirements of transparency and responsibility. His critiques span several political periods. He observes the socialist years, the 2000 political transition led by Abdoulaye Wade, and then the Macky Sall years. He has notably dedicated several works to liberal governance and the promises of this transition. Among his publications are *Me Wade and the Transition: The Broken Dream of the Sopi*, *The Wade Clan: Hoarding, Contempt, and Vanity*, and *20 Years of Socialist Governance as Seen by a Senegalese Citizen*. These titles demonstrate his ongoing interest in the mechanisms of power and how leaders exercise their responsibilities.
From criticism to institutional commitment
His career is not limited to observing public affairs from the outside. Mody Niang also held positions within the National Office for the Fight Against Fraud and Corruption (OFNAC), where he served as a technical advisor and spokesperson. He left the institution in February 2016. This experience illustrates the difficulty of reconciling institutional responsibilities with a long tradition of freedom of speech and public stances. Over the years, he became a familiar figure in the media, where his contributions fueled discussions on democracy, transparency, and ethics in public administration. His political engagement also evolved. Close to Ousmane Sonko and the Pastef party, he supported the new authorities after the 2024 transition of power. On August 7 of that same year, he was appointed chairman of the board of directors of the Senegalese Press and Publication Company (SSPP), publisher of the national daily newspaper Le Soleil. He officially took office in September. His tenure as chairman of the board, however, was short-lived. In March 2025, he announced his resignation, citing primarily health reasons. He was careful to clarify that his departure was not related to his political involvement or his support for the new authorities.
A legacy made of books and convictions
Mody Niang passed away on October 17, 2026, at the age of 81. His career was that of an educator who became an essayist, then a columnist whose contributions resonated with several generations of readers and public figures. His positions were not always universally accepted. But his journey testifies to a constant desire to participate in the national debate and to remind those in power of their obligations to the citizens. From the classroom to the newspaper columns, and through public institutions, he maintained a single focus: the role of education, the quality of governance, and the responsibility of those who lead the country.
With his passing, Senegal loses a committed intellectual whose writings will continue to fuel debates on political transitions, democracy, and the exercise of power. His career reminds us that beyond official functions, the pen can also become an instrument of civic vigilance.

Mission accomplie
