«C'est un mauvais coup tordu…» : Madiambal réagit suite à la candidature ougandaise au poste de Sg de l’Onu
As previously announced, Macky Sall is no longer the only African candidate vying for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN). Uganda has also put forward the candidacy of Olara Otunnu. This news prompted a reaction from Madiambal Diagne, a close associate of Macky Sall.
"This is a dirty trick that is shocking in African diplomatic circles. Uganda has just presented a new candidate, Olara Otunnu, for the post of UN Secretary-General, despite Macky Sall's excellent performance in the candidates' oral exams. Africa is tearing itself apart," he fumed.
A former United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, Mr. Otunnu also served as Uganda's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (1980-1985). He was also Uganda's Minister of Foreign Affairs and President of the International Peace Academy (now the International Peace Institute).
"His candidacy demonstrates the breadth of his experience, his political acumen and his ability to build consensus, qualities which the Republic of Uganda considers essential to the Office of the Secretary-General at this stage of the crisis," reads his application dossier.
