Harcèlement sexuel présumé au Mondial : Abdoulaye Sow dévoile les coulisses de la gestion du dossier
For the first time since the outbreak of the alleged sexual harassment case involving the cook of the national football team in the United States, the secretary general of the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), Abdoulaye Saydou Sow, has revisited the circumstances surrounding the handling of this case.
Invited this Sunday to the program "Point de vue" on RTS, he explained the reasons that led federal officials to repatriate the person in question, a decision which he considers to have preserved the serenity of the group and the image of Senegal.
According to Abdoulaye Saydou Sow, information relayed in the press has given rise to interpretations and insinuations, whereas the federation acted with the aim of protecting the country's interests. "Regarding this story about the Lions' cook, there are press articles that have appeared, insinuations are being spread, whereas on this matter, the Senegalese should congratulate us, President Abdoulaye Fall and myself, for having protected the honor and dignity of Senegal," he declared.
The FSF's general secretary explained that the leaders had been informed of specific incidents which they considered to constitute sexual harassment. Given this situation, he felt it was necessary to act quickly to avoid potential intervention from the American authorities.
"There was an act amounting to sexual harassment. When we were informed, with very specific acts, did we have to wait for the American police to handcuff one of our guys (sic) before conducting investigations?" he asked.
The choice of repatriation
Abdoulaye Saydou Sow indicated that the repatriation of the cook of the Tanière had been decided after consultation with the president of the FSF, Abdoulaye Fall, who was then traveling in Mexico, as well as with officials of the State of Senegal.
"Measures had to be taken, namely bringing the cook back to the country. This measure was taken in consultation with the president of the federation who was traveling in Mexico, but also with officials from the State of Senegal," he specified.
For him, this decision helped to preserve "the peace and balance" of the Senegalese team during the competition, while preventing this affair from damaging the country's image.
The federal official also addressed the differences in perception between Senegalese social practices and the norms in force in the United States. "There are Senegalese practices that are not Western. We do not have the same cultures or the same civilizations," he explained.
According to him, certain behaviors considered harmless in the Senegalese context can be interpreted differently in the United States. "Here in Senegal, you can talk to a woman, laugh, pat her, and think it's a joke. In the United States, that's considered harassment. And that's exactly what happened," he argued.
Abdoulaye Saydou Sow also revealed that the Senegalese Football Federation had taken steps ahead of the competition, notably with the appointment of this agent in question, tasked with anticipating certain issues related to the life of the delegation.
