Hausse du carburant : « Le gouvernement a fait son maximum », assure Aminata Touré
In response to the strong reactions sparked by the fuel price adjustment in Senegal, Aminata Touré broke her silence to offer her perspective. While acknowledging the pressure on household purchasing power in a challenging economic climate, the former Prime Minister nevertheless insisted on placing this decision within its macroeconomic and international context.
For the former head of government, this increase cannot be isolated from the overall economic situation. She highlights major geopolitical constraints, citing the impact of the war in Ukraine on the price of basic necessities, as well as the intense tensions surrounding the oil market and the Strait of Hormuz.
“The government did its utmost to keep prices down,” she told RTS, recalling that a price reduction had been granted to consumers before international instability made the measure unsustainable. While not downplaying the direct impact on citizens' daily lives, she admitted that “things are not easy” and believes this situation should serve as a catalyst for discussing the country's socio-economic prospects.
A priority debate to be transferred to the National Assembly
Rather than allowing Parliament to engage in sterile political squabbles and tensions, Aminata Touré urges parliamentarians to take up the issue and make it a priority. She specifically recommends that the National Assembly summon the Minister of Energy or the Minister of Economy and Finance to provide the Senegalese people with a clear understanding of the government's direction for the coming months.
“How will you mobilize more resources to increase the purchasing power of Senegalese people? This is the type of debate that needs to be addressed in the National Assembly,” she says, stressing the need to place the economic emergencies of households at the heart of the political agenda.
Financial resilience and continuation of social policies
To defend the government's management, the former Prime Minister emphasizes the preservation of financial stability. In a context of tensions with certain financial partners that slowed the execution of some projects, the State demonstrated "resilience" by guaranteeing the regular payment of civil servant salaries, the continuation of social programs, and the fulfillment of sovereign debt repayment deadlines.
Faced with these constrained budgetary choices, Aminata Touré emphasizes the key role of support mechanisms. She insists on maintaining and strengthening family allowances and social safety nets, designed as essential buffers to protect the most vulnerable segments of the population.
Refusing to accept the inevitable, Aminata Touré sees opportunities for improvement through the development of local energy resources. She places her hopes on the development of Senegal's gas potential through the "gas-to-power" strategy.
The goal of this transition to domestic gas is to produce more affordable electricity, reducing the country's dependence on imported hydrocarbons. This structural shift should, according to her, ease household bills and strengthen the competitiveness of Senegalese businesses.
