Projet Agro M10 de Sadio Mané : Un jeune producteur de la Casamance réagit à la critique du numéro 1 de la mangue en Afrique
The SM10 Agro agro-industrial project, spearheaded by Senegalese international Sadio Mané, was launched on September 19th in Bambali. While a recognized expert in the African mango sector predicted failure, calling it a "catastrophe" and a "project that will not work," a young producer from Casamance, Youssouph Diatta, former field coordinator for FM Agri SUARL, former head of the producer support unit at Casamango SAS, and former zone manager (Casamance–Niayes) for Casamango SAS, felt compelled to respond with solid arguments.
For him, these alarmist statements ignore the reality on the ground. Casamance already has recognized expertise in mango processing, with organizations like SODECA and several small units that have been producing juice, vinegar, dried mango, and other derivatives for years. "Mango processing is not new in Casamance," he insists, noting that Sadio Mané's project is a continuation of this tradition but with industrial and international ambitions.
The SM10 Agro project is focusing on the Kent variety, highly prized on global markets. According to Diatta, this choice is judicious: “It is already present in Casamance, even if industrial orchards still need to be developed. While awaiting full production from the planned plantations, the supply can be ensured through organized collection from local and national cooperatives.” He also puts into perspective the difficulties mentioned by the expert, such as the height of the mango trees or the short duration of the harvesting season: “There are adapted harvesting techniques and other varieties like Keitt or Diourou that allow for a longer processing time.”
One of the key aspects of the project is precisely addressing the challenge of preservation. While fresh mangoes are difficult to store, their by-products—dried mango, butter, juice—offer considerable sustainability and added value. The factory plans to process, store, and gradually market these products on a large scale, directly addressing the concerns raised.
Another major advantage is diversification. The project will not be limited to mangoes but will also include the processing of other fruits such as bananas. In the area, about ten plantations of more than 25 hectares already exist, including one in Bambali, guaranteeing continuous industrial activity throughout the year.
Youssouph Diatta nevertheless acknowledges the relevance of some of the expert's suggestions, particularly the idea of developing plantations in different agro-ecological zones to extend the growing season and reduce raw material costs. For him, this type of constructive input is far more useful than dramatic predictions of failure.
In short, the former field coordinator of FM Agri SUARL emphasizes that the success of an agro-industrial project depends not only on natural resources or financial investment, but also on the quality of human resources and on sound and honest management. "The potential is real, and the chances of success are enormous," he affirms, urging stakeholders to support rather than discourage an initiative that could bring about lasting change in the economy of Casamance and Senegal.
