Africa Health Collaborative : 4 milliards pour former et outiller 7 000 jeunes
Thousands of young people trained in healthcare professions are still struggling to find jobs. To broaden their employment prospects, Senegal is focusing on training, employability, and entrepreneurship. Through the Africa Health Collaborative (AHC) project, 7,000 young people are to be supported by 2027, with a budget of 4 billion CFA francs.
The goal is to move beyond public sector recruitment as the sole career path for young healthcare professionals. Through the Africa Health Collaborative (AHC) project, implemented with the Mastercard Foundation and Amref Health Africa, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene, Senegal aims to equip them with the skills necessary to develop their own businesses and create jobs in the sector.
The first meeting of the AHC Steering Committee was held this Wednesday, September 16th in Dakar to review the progress of the program and define the next priorities.
According to Ndeye Sokhna Diawara Ndao, head of the Training Division at the Ministry of Health, the program aims to reach 7,000 young people by 2027. To date, "1,000 and some young people" have already been enrolled in the various training programs.
The program targets both recent graduates and professionals already in the workforce. Last week, approximately 600 young healthcare professionals and 600 recent graduates, across all professional categories, were enrolled on the training platform.
Four modules are offered to them: life skills, health entrepreneurship, youth advocacy and primary health care.
However, the ambition is not limited to training. The entrepreneurship component should allow young professionals to develop their own businesses and, ultimately, create jobs in the health sector.
"They will no longer have to wait for the Ministry of Health or the Civil Service to be integrated," explains Ndèye Sokhna Diawara Ndao.
Initially deployed in three regions, including Dakar and Diourbel, the project has now been extended to all 14 regions of Senegal. It also includes support for training institutions, particularly in supervision, with the aim of contributing to their accreditation.
To implement this strategy, 4 billion CFA francs have been allocated to the project in Senegal. Alongside the first meeting of the Steering Committee, a ceremony was also held to award scholarships and equipment.
Behind the objective of training 7,000 young people lies a broader issue: transforming these trainings into jobs, activities and skills that are truly useful to health establishments and populations.
The real challenge will therefore be to measure, by 2027, the concrete results of this 4 billion FCFA bet on the integration of young people and the strengthening of the Senegalese health system.
