Alerte santé : Un édulcorant présent dans les chewing-gums et dentifrices lié à un risque accru d'AVC !
Found in chewing gum, toothpaste, jams, yogurts, and ice cream, xylitol could lead to serious cardiovascular complications. This is the finding of a large observational study of more than 17,000 people presented at the annual congress of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) in Munich.
Followed for six years, participants with the highest blood concentrations of xylitol had a 57% higher risk of death, heart attack, or stroke compared to those with the lowest levels. This finding remained consistent regardless of age, sex, or risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Dr. Marco Witkowski, a researcher at the Charité Hospital in Berlin, noted that previous studies had already demonstrated xylitol's ability to promote blood clot formation by stimulating platelets.
Despite these alarming results, experts are urging caution. Professor Dan Atar (ESC) and dietitian Dell Stanford (British Heart Foundation) point out that an observational study establishes a correlation but does not prove direct causality. Pending further research, scientists recommend prioritizing a balanced diet and reducing the consumption of ultra-processed foods, without, however, returning to a diet high in free sugars.
