Bignona face à la menace de la diphtérie : le district sanitaire intensifie la riposte avant la rentrée scolaire
With the start of the school year just days away, the Bignona health district is stepping up its vigilance against the diphtheria epidemic affecting several regions of Senegal. Local health authorities have implemented a surveillance and catch-up vaccination program to prevent the spread of this infectious disease within schools.
The chief medical officer of the Bignona health district, Dr. Mamadou Lamine Sagna, indicated that the district recently recorded a confirmed case of diphtheria in the Sindian district, specifically in the area covered by the Sindian health post.
According to him, the patient in question was a foreign national receiving care from the health services. After the onset of symptoms and subsequent tests, a diagnosis of diphtheria was confirmed. In response to this situation, an epidemiological investigation was immediately launched to identify individuals who had been in contact with the patient.
The investigation identified six children who had been in contact with the infected individual. One of them also tested positive for the disease. Thanks to prompt intervention and appropriate treatment, both patients have recovered, the health official confirmed.
“Fortunately, the case has been cured. We followed up with the six children who were contacts and one of them was also positive. With treatment, these children have recovered,” said Dr. Sagna.
As the start of the school year approaches, the health district has decided to strengthen preventive measures across all health facilities in the department. Directives have been issued to all head nurses at each post to identify children who have not completed their vaccination schedule.
The objective is to carry out catch-up vaccination to reduce the risks of the virus circulating within communities and particularly in schools where contact between children is frequent.
For the district's chief medical officer, vaccination remains the safest and most effective way to prevent this disease.
"The only way to prevent this disease is through the vaccination of children under the Expanded Program on Immunization," he reminded, urging parents to check their children's vaccination status and to supplement any missing doses at health posts.
This catch-up vaccination strategy is currently being deployed across the district to identify under-vaccinated children and provide them with full protection against diphtheria.
Despite the recovery of the cases identified in Sindian, health authorities are maintaining a high level of vigilance. The focus is now on prevention, raising awareness among families, and strengthening vaccination coverage to avoid the emergence of new cases as the start of the school year approaches.
For the Bignona health district, the fight against diphtheria depends first and foremost on strong community mobilization and adherence to the vaccination schedule, considered the best weapon to protect children sustainably against this potentially serious disease.
