Crise dans le secteur de la santé : les syndicats durcissent le ton et annoncent une nouvelle vague de grèves
Tensions are rising in the health sector in Senegal. The Alliance of Autonomous Health Unions (ASAS), which includes SUTSAS, SUDTM-Santé, SAT Santé/D, CNTS Santé and SYTRACTS, has decided to intensify its protest against what it calls the government's "delaying tactics".
In a press release, the ASAS board announced the continuation of the strike call for Wednesday 22, Thursday 23 and Friday 24 April 2026. This decision follows the evaluation deemed unsatisfactory of the 72 hours of strike observed on 8, 9 and 10 April.
A deliberate radicalization
The unions are denouncing, in particular, requisitions, salary cuts, and a lack of political will in managing the crisis. All these measures, they argue, reflect a failure to respond concretely to the demands of healthcare workers.
Despite this tense climate, ASAS welcomes the successful outcome of the recent transport workers' strike, which it attributes to the direct involvement of the Head of State. This precedent, according to the union representatives, reinforces their conviction regarding the need for presidential intervention in the current conflict.
A direct appeal to the head of state
In this context, the Alliance reiterates its request for arbitration from the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye. It believes that only involvement at the highest level of the State will resolve the situation, given what it perceives as government inaction and the lack of commitment from the Prime Minister.
Union leaders point out that this is not the first time the sector has faced such a crisis. They cite, in particular, the tensions of 2018, which necessitated the implementation of several action plans and led to a de-escalation meeting in January 2019 under the administration of former President Macky Sall.
A sector under pressure
For ASAS, the continuation of this conflict could have serious consequences for the functioning of the already fragile healthcare system. While acknowledging the importance of continuity of care, the unions insist on the urgent need to find a lasting solution to this crisis.
While awaiting a response from the authorities, a standoff now appears to be underway between actors in the health sector and the government, with crucial issues for the population at stake.
