Diphtérie : 6 morts et 34 cas confirmés, lancement d'une campagne de rattrapage vaccinal
Senegal is facing a resurgence of diphtheria cases. According to the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene, 34 confirmed cases, including six deaths, have been recorded since the first case was confirmed on August 1, 2026.

Infections have been recorded in eight health districts spread across six regions. The Kédougou region has the highest number of cases with 23, followed by Dakar (5 cases), Thiès (3 cases), then Louga, Diourbel and Kaolack, which each have one case.
In response to this situation, health authorities have strengthened their response measures. These measures include medical care for patients, systematic investigations of detected cases, and the identification and rigorous monitoring of contacts.
Reminding everyone that diphtheria is a vaccine-preventable disease, the Ministry has intensified epidemiological surveillance and launched catch-up vaccination campaigns for unvaccinated or insufficiently protected children. Parents are strongly urged to adhere to the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) schedule, check their children's vaccination status, and ensure that any missing doses are administered.
Authorities also recommend going to the nearest health facility as soon as the first symptoms appear and to avoid any self-medication. They urge the public to be vigilant and to strictly adhere to health guidelines.
Diphtheria is an infectious and contagious disease with a high epidemic potential. Its main symptoms include a sore throat, fever, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, neck swelling, or the appearance of grayish pseudomembranes in the throat. Severe respiratory complications can also occur.
