Excluded from public service consultations: SAMES announces a strike

Écarté des concertations sur la Fonction publique: Le SAMES annonce une grève

The social climate is likely to become even more tense in the health sector. The Autonomous Union of Doctors, Pharmacists and Dentists of Senegal (SAMES) accuses the government of deliberately excluding it from ongoing consultations on issues affecting the civil service and health.

‎

In a statement published after its National Executive Bureau meeting, the union denounced an approach it deemed "biased", accusing the Minister in charge of the Civil Service of having favoured certain trade union organizations while excluding SAMES, which is representative of doctors, pharmacists and dentists in the public and semi-public sectors.

SAMES points out that it had nevertheless chosen appeasement by suspending its action plan in February 2025, within the framework of the Social Stability Pact, in order to promote a constructive dialogue around its demands.

But, according to the union, this offer of dialogue received no satisfactory response from the authorities. Believing that the Ministers of Health and Public Service chose "contempt, exclusion, and delaying tactics," SAMES holds them responsible for the deteriorating social climate within the healthcare system.

‎

In response to this situation, the union is calling on its members to mobilize and has announced the imminent filing of a new list of demands, accompanied by a strike notice. It specifies that the details of this new action will be finalized during the session of its National Executive Council scheduled for July 17-19, 2026.

While reaffirming its openness to a "serious, inclusive, and respectful" dialogue, SAMES warns that it will no longer endorse what it calls a "sham consultation" or any attempt to divide the unions. If nothing changes, it cautions, the government will have to bear the sole responsibility for the consequences of a potential social crisis in the healthcare sector.

Mais ils vont en grève Pourquoi encore? Non mais ces gens là sont de vrais irresponsables. Ils vont en grève pour n’importe quoi. Sauf pour ce qui améliore la santé des populations. Jamais cela.
