Elle a consacré sa vie à combattre le cancer : la Dr Fatma Guenoune annonce être atteinte d’un cancer du sein
For nearly forty years, Dr. Fatma Guenoune has been at the forefront of the fight against women's cancers. Today, at 66, the president of the Senegalese League Against Cancer (LISCA) reveals that she herself has breast cancer. This personal ordeal gives particular resonance to her long-standing struggle.
For decades, Dr. Fatma Guenoune has supported women facing cancer. A specialist in cervicovaginal pathologies, she has dedicated a large part of her professional life to women's health. For the past twelve years, she has presided over Lisca, championing prevention, awareness, and screening. Today, she who has long fought this disease alongside patients finds herself facing a diagnosis.
“I had cancer, which I discovered myself on May 2nd,” she reveals in a poignant testimony broadcast by Evenprod Médias. A particularly striking discovery for this practitioner accustomed to examining and palpating breasts in search of any abnormalities: “I’m a doctor, I’m used to palpating breasts, I’m used to feeling lumps. And when I felt my breast, this tumor there, I knew it was cancer.”
The moment of discovery remains etched in her story. After feeling pain, she performed a self-examination. The professional skill, which had become second nature over the years, then took on a whole new dimension: "When I felt it, I saw that it was a tumor." She says she immediately understood the seriousness of the situation.
Her personal history is also marked by a heavy hereditary burden. She explains that several members of her family have been affected by different types of cancer and specifies that she is the fifth person in her lineage to face breast cancer.
Faced with the disease, Dr. Fatma Guenoune announced her decision to undergo a double mastectomy. But beyond her own medical journey, the president of Lisca intends to use this ordeal as a new tool for raising awareness. Her story serves as a reminder of a reality she has tirelessly taught: cancer can affect anyone.
“People need to know that no one is immune to this disease. That anyone can develop cancer,” she emphasizes.
For years, she spoke about cancer from the perspective of a doctor, an activist, and an advocate for patients. Now, she also experiences the disease from the patient's bedside. This situation lends a unique strength to her commitment. Having dedicated a large part of her life to fighting the scourge, she must now wage her own battle against the same disease: "And I, too, have had my cancer," she bravely summarizes.
