Kédougou : L’unique scanner de l’hôpital Amath Dansokho à l’épreuve des pannes récurrentes
The Amath Dansokho Regional Hospital in Kédougou is facing a worrying situation with its single 16-slice CT scanner. This machine, now obsolete, is plagued by recurring breakdowns, which can force some patients to be transferred to other healthcare facilities, particularly in Tambacounda.
In Kédougou, access to advanced medical imaging remains a real challenge. The only scanner at the Amath Dansokho Regional Hospital, a 16-slice machine that is now fully depreciated, experiences repeated breakdowns.
For every malfunction, the hospital must request technical expertise, which most often comes from outside the region. Once the diagnosis is made, the situation can become even more complicated when a replacement part is needed.
According to reports, when parts are available, they usually have to be shipped from Dakar or abroad, with delays of at least ten days before they arrive in Kédougou.
Patients forced to travel hundreds of kilometers
These outages have significant consequences for patients. When the scanner is out of service and an examination is medically necessary, some patients must be referred to other healthcare facilities, particularly in Tambacounda.
This situation further burdens the care of patients and their families, in a region where distances already pose a major challenge to accessing specialist care.
The problem therefore goes beyond the mere question of equipment availability. It directly affects the continuity of diagnostic services and the regional hospital's capacity to meet the needs of the population of Kédougou.
Towards advocacy efforts with partners and mining companies?
Faced with this situation, the Board of Directors of the Amath Dansokho Regional Hospital is called upon to intensify its efforts with the hospital's partners, as well as with mining companies located in the region, in order to seek the necessary means to acquire a new scanner.
In a region where mining plays a significant role in the local economy, support from companies operating in Kédougou could contribute to strengthening the technical facilities of the regional hospital.
The acquisition of a new and more efficient scanner would notably reduce interruptions due to breakdowns of aging equipment and improve the care of patients requiring medical imaging examinations.
