Le Sénégal veut mobiliser 150 milliards FCFA pour terrasser le paludisme d’ici 2030
Senegal is on the cusp of a historic turning point in the fight against malaria. After more than thirty years of relentless struggle, the country is officially moving from the control phase to the phase of definitively eliminating the disease. But this final stretch comes at a price: 150 billion CFA francs over five years, representing an annual effort of 30 billion. A colossal sum, 97% of which still needs to be raised.
Speaking at a dedicated panel, Professor Aliou Thiongane, coordinator of the National Malaria Control Program (PNLP), welcomed the progress made. The incidence rate fell from 23 cases per 1,000 inhabitants in 2024 to approximately 13 in 2025, while the number of deaths was halved over the same period, dropping from 314 to 155.
Today, 73 of the country's 79 health districts, or 92%, are in the pre-elimination phase. These results stem from three decades of efforts combining chemoprevention, distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets, screening, and free treatment.
However, the epidemiological mapping reveals a two-sided reality. Around ten districts in the North now show an incidence of less than one case per 1,000 inhabitants. Conversely, in the Southeast, the Saraya district is recording peaks of up to 500 cases per 1,000 inhabitants, a critical level fueled by heavy rainfall, its landlocked location, and its border with Mali and Guinea.
This disparity necessitates a radical change of approach: Senegal must abandon mass struggle in favor of a case-by-case investigation and targeted response approach.
While the technical vision is clear, the budgetary hurdle threatens the 2030 deadline. Dr. Mamadou Moustapha Diop, Director of Disease Control, points out that almost all the necessary funds still need to be secured. To achieve this goal, the Ministry of Health plans to intensify its advocacy efforts with the government, the National Assembly, the private sector, and international partners to secure funding and definitively consolidate the progress made.
