Lipœdème : quelle est cette maladie qui toucherait 1 femme sur 10 ?
Lipedema, a chronic disease that is still poorly diagnosed, affects millions of women and weighs heavily on their daily lives, far beyond mere appearance.
Heavy legs, persistent pain, recurring bruising, a disproportionate figure… Behind these symptoms, too often dismissed, sometimes lies lipedema. Long ignored and still poorly diagnosed, this chronic and progressive condition is estimated to affect one in ten women.
Recognized by the WHO since 2018, it corresponds to an abnormal accumulation of fat, mainly in the legs, hence its nickname of "tree trunk leg disease", knowing that the arms can also be affected.
Beyond the aesthetic aspect, patients mainly describe significant pain, a feeling of heaviness, lumps under the skin, skin hypersensitivity and frequent bruising , sometimes from the slightest bump.
Symptoms vary in intensity depending on the stage of the disease (from 1 to 4). Often confused with obesity or lymphedema, lipedema appears during hormonal changes, such as puberty, pregnancy or menopause .
Unlike typical weight gain, these deposits are resistant to dieting. And, to date, there is no cure. Management relies on a suitable lifestyle: an anti-inflammatory diet , physical activity, wearing compression garments, and lymphatic drainage.
In some cases, specific liposuction can improve quality of life, but it is not covered by insurance and remains expensive.
