« Mauvais signal » : La LISTAB indignée après le faux-bond d'Ibrahima Sy lors de la Journée mondiale sans tabac
While the fight against tobacco is presented as a major public health issue, the celebration of World No Tobacco Day 2026 in Senegal left a bitter taste for those involved in this fight. The reason: the conspicuous absence of the Minister of Health and Social Action, Ibrahima Sy, from the official ceremony held this Monday in Dakar.
In the hall, however, all the components of the mobilization were represented: administrative authorities, local elected officials, members of parliament, healthcare professionals, civil society organizations, teachers, students, journalists, and technical partners. All had answered the call to mark this day dedicated to tobacco prevention. But the notable absentee was the one many were expecting: the Minister of Health. For the Senegalese League Against Tobacco (LISTAB) and its partners, this absence is far from insignificant. Especially since the date of the ceremony had been set by the Minister himself after several successive postponements that had already caused confusion among those involved in the fight against tobacco. His last-minute withdrawal is seen as a bad sign. "Is the fight against tobacco still a priority for the Ministry of Health?" The question, posed openly in the civil society's press release, reflects a deeper unease. The organizations denounce a lack of involvement from health authorities on an issue that particularly affects young people. They point out that in more than two years at the head of the department, the minister has only chaired one meeting dedicated to the fight against tobacco.
Concerns also extend to the delay in the expected regulations governing shisha and e-cigarettes. Activists argue that every month lost benefits the tobacco and nicotine industry, while more and more young people are exposed to these products. Despite their disappointment, the organizations insist they will not give up. They promise to continue their advocacy efforts to ensure that the protection of the population, particularly children and adolescents, remains a central focus of public policy.
