Without this intervention, he could have lost his sight. Rhys Hibbert, a father of two from Bedfordshire, underwent successful brain surgery at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London.

He is the first patient to have undergone surgery with real-time assistance from artificial intelligence, and his tumor was removed, the BBC reported on Wednesday. The surgery took place in May, but details were kept secret until Thursday to allow the patient time to recover, The Guardian reported.

The AI tool analyzed the video footage of the operation in real time and advised the surgeons on how to avoid crucial blood vessels and nerves hidden within the brain. This allowed them to safely remove most of the tumor.

“From a patient safety perspective, I completely see the benefit (of the AI tool). There are no road signs inside our heads,” said Rhys Hibbert. The 40-year-old was in excellent health just 18 months ago. But during a walk, he lost consciousness and began having seizures on the road.
