Sames : Un mot d’ordre de grève largement observé à Tivaouane
The 48-hour strike called by the Autonomous Union of Doctors, Pharmacists, and Dentists of Senegal (SAMES) was widely observed in the Tivaouane department, particularly at the Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh Hospital. This information comes from the union's representative in the department, Dr. Abdoul Aziz Ly.
“The protest led to the suspension of outpatient consultations, scheduled operating room activities, and some administrative functions,” he stated. The union representative clarified, however, that “emergency cases continued to be handled, in accordance with the requirements of medical ethics.”
Dr. Abdoul Aziz Ly explains that "this strike is in no way directed against the population of Senegal. It is being carried out to defend a public health system in peril and to guarantee every citizen, every Senegalese person, the right to quality care."
Sames is demanding, in particular, "a special status for the medical profession, improved recruitment conditions and career plans, as well as a fairer compensation system and retirement pension."
The trade union organization is also calling for a reform of medical, pharmaceutical and dental training, the strengthening of infrastructure, equipment and human resources, among other things.
