Sécurité sanitaire des aliments : Près de 15 000 baguettes de pain saisies en un mois à Dakar
Food safety: Nearly 15,000 baguettes seized in one month in Dakar
The Dakar regional hygiene brigade is intensifying its control operations to combat certain practices that could compromise food safety. On Monday, September 7, 2026, its head, Captain Idrissa Ndiaye, conducted a field visit to assess operations known as "Retour de manivelle" (Backlash), "Foffy," and "Pétrin" (Kneading), as well as actions targeting shops converted into makeshift food stalls.

In the Fass and Gueule Tapée neighborhoods, officers inspected the conditions under which bread was transported. This practice is regulated by Law No. 83-71, the Hygiene Code, specifically Article L46, as well as by Decree No. 2019-2277. These operations, carried out by sworn officers in accordance with applicable legal provisions, resulted in several seizures.
Nearly 15,000 baguettes removed from delivery
In the space of a month, nearly 15,000 baguettes were withdrawn from delivery due to non-compliance with transport regulations. The brigade also reported 103 bicycles impounded and two Jakarta motorcycles stopped during these operations.
Another area of concern is the sale of water sachets exposed directly to sunlight. On this point, the regional hygiene brigade notes a positive trend. The number of sachets is decreasing, and several retailers have improved storage conditions to protect them from heat and light. Despite these improvements, 63 batches of water sachets were recalled from 11 shops.
The brigade reminds people of the risks associated with prolonged exposure of plastic packaging to heat and sunlight, including their possible degradation and the release of plastic particles that could be ingested.
The "Tapa Lapa" ovens are almost at a standstill
Regarding the "Tapa Lapa" ovens, the inspections also appear to have yielded results. Their use has virtually ceased. Only one instance of renewed activity was observed during the raid. The equipment was immediately seized.
The brigade has also noted a decrease in the practice of cooking food directly inside shops. However, a few offenders persist. For each violation, the equipment used, including gas cylinders and utensils, is confiscated, and the individual is required to pay a fixed fine.
For Captain Idrissa Ndiaye and his team, the goal now is to make these inspections a long-term practice. The Dakar regional hygiene brigade intends to routinely carry out these operations in order to correct the shortcomings identified in monitoring and to sustainably strengthen food safety.
