Senegal: Independent health unions declare a 48-hour total strike on July 23 and 24

Sénégal : les syndicats autonomes de la santé décrètent 48 heures de grève totale les 23 et 24 juillet

The Alliance of Independent Health Unions (ASAS), comprising SUTSAS, SUDTM-Santé, SAT Santé, D-CNTS Santé, SAT/CL, SYTRACTS, and their partners, has announced a further escalation of its protest movement. The unions are calling for a 48-hour total strike on Thursday, July 23, and Friday, July 24, 2026, as part of their twelfth action plan.

According to the slogan issued by the Alliance, this strike will be observed without minimum service and without emergency care, reflecting the unions' desire to increase pressure on the authorities in order to obtain a response to their demands.

Beyond the work stoppage, the unions have also decided to boycott all coordination meetings, including staff meetings, reviews, and supervisory activities organized within healthcare facilities. They also announced a boycott of the National Training Program (PNT), while only training activities will remain authorized during this period of mobilization.

ASAS plans to assess the situation on July 25, 2026, at the end of this new phase of struggle, in order to determine the next directions of its movement.

In their message to healthcare workers, union leaders reaffirmed their determination to continue the fight until their demands are met. They described their struggle as "just, legitimate, and necessary" and called on all staff to remain mobilized in a spirit of solidarity, justice, unity, and determination.

This new strike comes amid high tensions between health sector unions and the government. If it is widely supported, it could cause significant disruptions in the country's healthcare facilities and affect public access to care during the two days of action.
