Tivaouane : Le nouvel hôpital armé pour réduire les évacuations vers Dakar
Just days before the Gamou of Tivaouane, the religious city is taking a major step in strengthening its healthcare system. The Minister of Health and Public Hygiene, Dr. Ibrahima Sy, will officially inaugurate the Seydi El Hadji Malick Sy National Hospital Center this Monday, August 10, 2026.
Scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., the ceremony comes at a strategic time, as Tivaouane accelerates its preparations to welcome hundreds of thousands of faithful for the Gamou, announced for August 26, subject to the observation of the crescent moon.
The opening of this facility significantly strengthens the healthcare services available in the holy city. During the Gamou festival, the city experiences a massive influx of thousands of pilgrims from Senegal and abroad. This exceptional concentration of people presents a significant challenge for the healthcare system.
In this context, health is among the main priorities of the preparations, along with security, water, sanitation, traffic and the reception of pilgrims.
The new hospital should therefore make it possible to bring specialized care closer to the populations of Tivaouane and the surrounding localities.
The commissioning of the establishment also comes in accordance with an instruction from the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
During the Council of Ministers meeting on July 1, 2026, the Head of State asked the government to take the necessary measures to allow the opening of the new hospital in Tivaouane, particularly in anticipation of the religious events scheduled for August.
A few weeks later, the establishment is now called upon to play a central role in the health measures put in place for the Gamou.
The Seydi El Hadji Malick Sy National Hospital Centre has several departments designed to ensure diverse medical care.
The facility includes emergency, pediatric, gynecological, maternity, cardiological, and pulmonological services. It also has surgical emergency services for cases requiring rapid intervention.
In addition, there is a laboratory, a medical imaging department, and a central pharmacy. Maintenance, sterilization, and laundry units complete the infrastructure necessary for the hospital's operation.
Beyond the Gamou, the opening of this establishment represents a long-term challenge for the health system in Tivaouane.
The availability of a more complete technical platform should allow for the treatment of more patients locally and limit evacuations to Dakar or other major hospital centers in the country.
With the approach of Gamou, the new hospital is emerging as one of the main reinforcements to Tivaouane's healthcare system. This much-anticipated infrastructure is now expected to meet the needs of the population throughout the year and to absorb some of the high demand for care generated by large religious gatherings.
