The celebration, by the city of Thiès, in the presence of the governor of the region and the mayor Dr Babacar Diop, of the 140th anniversary of the disappearance, which occurred on October 27, 1886, of the national hero Lat Dior Ngoné Latyr Diop, Damel of Cayor and emblematic figure of the resistance to French colonization, highlighted the preservation of historical heritage, the transmission of values to younger generations and the calls from descendants for a better appreciation of the memorial site of Dékheulé, the place of his death located straddling the communes of Darou Marnane and Thilmakha.
A ceremony during which Lat Dior's family called for greater mobilization of Senegalese people around economic issues, moving beyond political and folkloric rhetoric. One of the national hero's grandsons, Bassirou Diop, initiator of the "Dékheulé notre fierté" (Unleash Our Pride) movement, believes it is essential to focus on the economy. He considers it urgent to establish, among other things, a strategic interconnection between the local authorities of Thiès, Tivaouane, and the Cayor region.
This impassioned appeal from the descendants of the Damel of Cayor advocates shifting the public debate, currently dominated by political maneuvering, towards a dynamic of territorial economic development. Bassirou Diop outlines a pragmatic roadmap structured around several key areas. Regarding the refocusing of priorities, the grandson of the resistance fighter calls for moving beyond sterile divisions to concentrate citizen and institutional energy on wealth creation, youth employment, and economic sovereignty.
This, he asserts, is the only way to honor the memory of Lat Dior: no longer through mere historical remembrance or folkloric celebration, but through concrete action and social progress. He particularly emphasizes inter-municipal cooperation and territorial integration, highlighting the opportunities such an economic axis would offer through strengthened synergy, capable of boosting agribusiness, opening up rural areas, and creating genuine tourist and cultural hubs.
