Affaire Mor Mbaye Cisse: Le CJP dénonce le recours à la privation de liberté
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has reacted to the detention of Seneweb journalist Mor Mbaye Cissé, which took place on Tuesday as part of an investigation into the alleged dissemination of false news.
In a Facebook post, the organization said it was "deeply concerned by the detention since Tuesday of Mor Mbaye Cissé, a reporter for Seneweb.com , accused of spreading false news for his writings on a theft case involving the son of a magistrate."
The CPJ believes that "Senegalese authorities should prioritize appropriate responses to journalistic work and avoid resorting to deprivation of liberty."
The organization adds that "reform of Senegalese laws is also more than necessary after the umpteenth arrest of a Senegalese journalist for spreading false news."
As a reminder, Mor Mbaye Cissé was taken into custody at the Urban Security headquarters after being questioned by investigators.
The journalist is being prosecuted for reporting the suspect's initial statements, in which he claimed to have stolen money from his father's wardrobe. However, subsequent investigations established that the funds came from an organized robbery involving 100 million CFA francs.
